It is sometimes said there is nothing new in interior design, just new twists on the old. Four local designers with their finger on the ‘‘what’s hot’’ pulse weighed in with what they believe we should be seeing in our homes this year.

Their suggestions will help ensure your interior style is on-trend, on target and sustainable.

1.Outdoor fabrics inside

The latest outdoor fabrics are soft with beautiful textures, patterns and colours; they will make you wonder why you never thought of using them for indoor areas prone to sun fade.

My favourites come from Mokum, Designs of the Time, Atelier and Unique.

2. Velvet

Velvet is always in style and variations run from soft matt cotton velvets to glamorous sheens and crushed seasonal favourites.

Living Coral – the 2019 Pantone Colour of the Year – brings a touch of warmth and sophistication to your home. If coral isn’t your thing, don’t be afraid to indulge in a rich deeper burnished terracotta version or lighten it up to a warm blush. Other colours to consider include sapphire blues, emerald greens, gold, pewter and champagne.

3. Potted plants

Indoor plants have been popular throughout the decades from the aspidistra in Victorian times to rubber plants and maidenhair ferns in the 1970s and 1980s.

Palm varieties add a sense of calm, texture and the natural environment to your home. Choose a palm with soft fronds and try grouping a variety of species and heights to give lush green tranquillity to your living areas.
