More than sleep to lifestyle beds

-

If you’ve been tossing and turning at night, it may not be just the summer heat making it hard to sleep. It could be time to look at the bed.

Beds wear as they age and gradually lose their comforts – the full body cushioning, support at the edges, and the level surface that limits partner disturbance. But before replacing like with like, it could be worth exploring one of the fastest-growing segments of the bedding industry: adjustable beds.

Initially designed to share the health benefits that come with adjustable positions for the back and feet, the beds have in recent years gained a luxury makeover with a suite of features fitting of a bedroom’s centrepiece.

Massage controls, antisnore and zero-gravity settings and independent operation of both sides on larger models are now relatively common for the electric-powered beds.

While still suitable for pregnant women and people suffering from reflux, arthritis, back pain or general mobility issues, the beds are also extremely stylish.

One of the widest ranges in Christchurch can be found at Bedworld. The Ferry Rd store currently has all adjustable beds on sale at 25 per cent off.

Bedworld owner Mark Elliott says the beds’ popularity reflects how much quality time people are now spending in bedrooms.

TV watching, browsing devices, reading and catching up with partners is as likely to happen in the bedroom as anywhere else.

The beds are also superb for sleeping, and a blessing for anyone who spends prolonged periods lying down, Mark says. ‘‘They really are lifestyle beds and not just for older people or those with injuries.’’

In many cases, people can match adjustable bases with the mattress they want. Memory foam, pocket springs, latex and other options are available.

At the top of the range are Mazon Virtali mattresses. These feature a high-density, visco-elastic material developed by Nasa and said to be so adept at distributing weight that users feel like they’re floating.

Natura Sleep mattresses offer a natural touch with latex, wool, bamboo and cotton.

Bedworld also stocks a wide variety of other beds and bedroom furniture, all made in New Zealand by quality suppliers.
