Satterthwaite backs Tiffen in coaching role
White Ferns skipper Amy Satterthwaite has thrown her support behind embattled coach Haidee Tiffen, saying she wants her to reapply for the role.
Tiffen, who has been in charge since 2015, stepped away from New Zealand’s three-match Rose Bowl ODI series against Australia, starting in Perth on Friday, after a review into the team’s poor showing at the T20 women’s World Cup in November.
The review also looked into wider aspects of the
White Ferns environment.
Tiffen requested a leave of absence in the wake of the review, which recommended all coaching and support staff roles be advertised at theend of their contract periods in July.
New Zealand Cricket high performance coach Bob Carter is temporarily taking charge of the team for the Rose Bowl series, which New Zealand hasn’t won since 1999. Tiffen looks to have coached the White Ferns for the last time, but Satterthwaite gave her a vote of confidence.
‘‘I want her to reapply for the job and, look, at the end of the day New Zealand Cricket have decided to go through this process and we know there’s hopefully going to be a lot of candidates apply for the job and I’m sure we’ll end up with the best candidate for the position,’’ Satterthwaite said before the team flew out to Australia.
NZC’s head of high performance Bryan Stronach has said the problems in the White Ferns camp ran wider than Tiffen and described her as ‘‘world-class’’.
Satterthwaite was surprised Tiffen had decided to take a break, but conceded it was a challenging and honest review. They had failed to play to their potential at the T20 World Cup and 2017 one-day World Cup, where they crashed out, not making the semifinals.
