Gangster struck with hammer

One person was hit in the head with a claw hammer, while others received stab wounds during a gang fight at a motorcycle event.

Emergency services were called to the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Templeton on Sunday about noon after a brawl between two gangs. It is understood the gangs involved were the Hells Angels Motorcycle Gang and The Outlaws Motorcycle Club.

The Press understands three gang members were injured in the fight, with one hit in the head with a claw hammer. The injuries ranged from moderate to serious, with some receiving stab wounds.

Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger said earlier police did not tolerate such behaviour, particularly at public events.

‘‘The actions of these criminal gangs are concerning and have made it unsafe for the general public, we would like to find out what happened and obtain evidence in relation to this offending,’’ he said.

Police encouraged witnesses to come forward.

Grainger said anyone with video footage of the incident should contact Christchurch police by calling 03 363 7400 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The Sound of Thunder motorcycle race was held at the raceway at the weekend. The organisers, the BEARS Motorcycle Club, declined to comment.

The Outlaws Motorcycle Club are an international gang, with a chapter in the east of the North Island as well as a presence in Blenheim.

St John spokeswoman Neha Concisom said an ambulance was called to the incident but was later stood down.

Earlier, police incorrectly said the fight was at the Ruapuna Speedway, which is beside the Mike Pero Motorsport Park.
