Gangster struck with hammer

One person was hit in the head with a claw hammer, while others received stab wounds during a gang fight at a motorcycle event.

Emergency services were called to the Mike Pero Motorsport Park in Templeton on Sunday about noon after a brawl between two gangs. It is understood the gangs involved were the Hells Angels Motorcycle Gang and The Outlaws Motorcycle Club.

The Press understand­s three gang members were injured in the fight, with one hit in the head with a claw hammer. The injuries ranged from moderate to serious, with some receiving stab wounds.

Detective Sergeant Brad Grainger said earlier police did not tolerate such behaviour, particular­ly at public events.

‘‘The actions of these criminal gangs are concerning and have made it unsafe for the general public, we would like to find out what happened and obtain evidence in relation to this offending,’’ he said.

Police encouraged witnesses to come forward.

The Sound of Thunder motorcycle race was held at the raceway at the weekend. The organisers, the BEARS Motorcycle Club, declined to comment.

The Outlaws Motorcycle Club are an internatio­nal gang, with a chapter in the east of the North Island as well as a presence in Blenheim.

St John spokeswoma­n Neha Concisom said an ambulance was called to the incident but was later stood down.

Earlier, police incorrectl­y said the fight was at the Ruapuna Speedway, which is beside the Mike Pero Motorsport Park.
