New layout works, with thousands attending

A bitter southerly snap did little to dent enthusiasm for the 15th South Island Lantern Festival held at the weekend.

Event organiser ChristchurchNZ said the celebration to conclude Chinese New Year attracted just under 55,000 people. Friday was the busiest day with 31,000 people enjoying lanterns,

With Sunday’s colder weather, numbers dropped to 7500 people and stage performances had to be cancelled. ChristchurchNZ destination and attraction general manager Loren Heaphy said the event cost about $700,000.

ChristchurchNZ contributed about $265,000 with the balance covered by sponsors including the Asia New Zealand Foundation, the Bank of China and the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China.

Problems with overcrowding at the 2018 event were fixed with a new layout, Heaphy said.

‘‘We took on suggestions and advice after the 2018 Christchurch Lantern Festival, and comments so far from attendees have been very positive.’’

The organisation hosted the South Island business forum ahead of the festival last week. ‘‘Many Christchurch companies and local government agencies enjoy a prosperous and friendly relationship with China.’’
