Adams breaks another record

-

Fresh from throwing further than the world record on Saturday, Lisa Adams broke another New Zealand record yesterday.

The younger sister of Dame Valerie Adams unleashed a New Zealand record of 25.88 metres in the Para Discus on the final day of the Jennian Homes NZ Track and Field Championships.

The performance solidifies her position as world No 2 – behind Czech thrower Eva Datsinska

(27.22m) – in what is the Kiwi’s secondary discipline.

Competing in the F37 category, Adams, who has cerebral palsy, was unable to claim her second national championship in as many days at Nga¯ Puna Wai Sports Hub in Christchurch on Saturday.

Auckland’s Tayla Clement

(F43) took out the Para Discus gold medal with a throw of

22.54m.

Para athletes are scored on percentages of the world record for each class.

On Saturday, Adams, 28, hurled a massive 14.12 metre throw to go beyond the world record of 13.96m but because the nationals were not sanctioned by World Para Athletics the record does not stand. The throw did stand as a New Zealand record.

On the track, Canterbury’s Rosa Flanagan regained the senior women’s 3000m steeplechase title in a time of 10:53.26.

‘‘It was really good to be back out there and racing injury-free and enjoying myself – which is as much as I can ask for,’’ she said.

Sam Tanner, the youngest Kiwi to run a sub-four-minute mile, was crowned national

1500m champion yesterday. Tanner stopped the clock in

4:08.97 – the slowest winning mark to take out this title since the event switched from a mile event to 1500m in 1970 – but the ferocious speed demonstrated by the 18-year-old prodigy to hunt down and pass the six-time champion Hamish Carson made up for the lack of early pace.

Carson, who was bidding to match Sir John Walker as a seven-time national 1500m champion, had to settle for silver in

4:10.90.

Zoe Hobbs matched her achievement of two years ago by bagging the 100m and 200m double with a hugely impressive display.

Katherine Camp completed the middle-distance double to beat champion Angie Petty with a confident run in the 1500m.
