Re-engineered

Camaro range supercharged.

-

HSV has announced a range of updates to its ‘‘re-engineered’’ Camaro range, including the addition of a manual option for the first time but, more excitingly, the ferocious 480kW/860Nm LT4 supercharged V8-powered ZL1 will also be landing here.

The ZL1 is the most powerful production Camaro and will be available in New Zealand with the choice of a six-speed manual or

10-speed automatic transmission. The direct injection 6.2-litre supercharged V8 has variable valve timing and features an external heavy-duty oil-to-air cooler, 11 heat exchangers for optimal powertrain cooling, while the engine’s supercharger is integrated into the intake manifold and fuel rail system for what HSV calls ‘‘incredibly precise operation’’.

The short-throw six-speed manual features active rev matching that automatically blips the throttle on a downshift, as well as hill hold and launch control.

The 10-speed auto comes with Custom Launch Control and a line lock that, if you don’t know, lets the driver lock the front wheels to ‘‘enable the rear wheels to spin, warming the tyres for maximum grip’’.

HSV’s press release goes on to say in big, bold lettering that ‘‘This feature is intended for use during closed-course track events only.’’

Of course it is.

The ZL1 also gets Magnetic Ride Control dampers, an electronically controlled Limited Slip Differential and Brembo performance brakes with 6-piston monobloc front calipers and

390mm two-piece front rotors, as well as a bi-modal performance exhaust system for more aural drama.

‘‘HSV has always had a history steeped in high-performance and the introduction of the ZL1 – the most powerful performance Camaro available in the world – really sings to HSV’s heritage,’’ said HSV’s managing director, Tim Jackson.

‘‘We’re sure the GM faithful, and performance enthusiasts alike, will be excited by our latest move.’’

While the power and torque figures are yet to be officially certified locally, HSV expects them to be ‘‘in the vicinity’’ of

480kW and 8600nm.

HSV says that production of the automatic ZL1 will kick off next month, and the manual will come online in May. Pricing will start at $173,990 for the manual, with the auto being a $2000 option.

Along with the addition of the

ZL1, the 2SS gets a refresh, with the added availability of the manual transmission and the new

10-speed auto, while retaining the same 339kW/617Nm 6.2-litre naturally aspirated LT1 V8.

Like the ZL1, the automatic comes with the launch control and line lock functions, and both also now get a head up display, forward collision alert and Chevrolet’s latest infotainment system.

The 2SS features new front-end styling, including the fascia, grille, dual element LED head-lamps, functional extractor-style hood and a ‘‘flow-tie’’ open bow-tie grille emblem. Both also get new style 20-inch alloy wheels.

‘‘With the extensive styling upgrades, the availability of two transmission options including the 10-speed paddle-shift auto, plus the addition of innovative new technologies, we’re confident our customers will recognise the tremendous value inherent in the

MY19 2SS Camaro,’’ Jackson said. The facelifted 2SS automatic will be the first to undergo the remanufacturing process at HSV’s facility in Clayton, starting this month. Pricing starts at $105,990 for the manual. The auto also ia a

$2000 option.
