Gun City sells out of AR15s

- Debrin Foxcroft

Gun City staff are telling customers they have sold out of

AR15s after the Christchurch terrorist attack.

When Stuff visited the Auckland store yesterday, a staff member was overheard telling someone on the phone that the

AR15 had sold out, but there were other models of semi-automatic guns available.

The rack where the AR15s had been displayed was empty.

A second staff member told a customer in the store that AR15s had been removed from the Gun City website due to media interest.

This followed reports of "panic-buying’’ by gun enthusiasts before any potential law change.

The self-described ‘‘largest gun store in the world’’ has been in the spotlight in the wake of the massacre of 50 Muslim men women and children during Friday prayers last week.

Gun City has also been subject to public scrutiny for a prominent billboard, outside the retailer’s Christchurch gun store, which shows a man teaching two young children how to shoot a target.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced there would be changes to New Zealand’s gun laws after the mass shooting.

The current legislation on semi-automatics, written after the Aramoana massacre in 1990, where 13 people were killed, has been roundly criticised for being ‘‘patchy’’ and ‘‘poorly written’’.
