One of Christchurch’s grand old houses has been put up for sale and could face demolition after its heritage protection was removed.

The house, Greystones, is on a large site on the corner of Glandovey and Idris roads in Fendalton, which is among the city’s most prized suburbs.

Built in the 1920s, it was badly damaged in the earthquakes and is for sale in as-is condition.

The house site on a 3000sqm of streamside land and is owned by the Westall Trust, which bought it for just over $1.6 million in late 2015.

The building was removed from the city council’s district plan and Heritage New Zealand register at the request of its owners due to the severity of the damage.

The council’s independent hearings panel approved the application, saying the engineering reports and repair costings ‘‘overwhelmingly’’ supported the delisting of the building.

The council’s district plan listing noted the house’s architectural and aesthetic significance.

Its ground floor is made of Port Hills basalt, and the garden has mature trees, including a protected copper beech tree.

According to the Heritage New Zealand listing, the house was designed in the 1920s by Hugh Hamilton, and once featured a prize-winning garden.

Real estate firm Harcourts describes the property as a ‘‘gracious and well known, large English domestic revival style dwelling’’, which a buyer could rescue, restore or replace.

The area has proven popular with property developers since the earthquakes because of its large sections and valuable Wairarapa Stream frontages.

Also for sale on the street in as-is condition is another large house on a large site described in advertising as ‘‘Tudor style six bedroom manor’’ on a 2200sq m section, along with an adjacent property.

On another part of the street, a reproduction Elizabethan manor house called Lintrathen was demolished after the quakes and has been replaced by developers the Huadu Group with the Lintrathen Gardens townhouses.

Other heritage-listed Christchurch houses already lost in the earthquakes include Riverlaw on Aynsley Tce, Marli, the Deanery and Country Glen Lodge all on Bealey Ave, Hadleigh on Springfield Rd, Wharetiki on Colombo St, Parkdale on Heaton St, Elizabeth House on Circuit St, Laurel on Papanui Rd, and Hagley on Wood Lane.

The property is described asa ‘‘gracious and well known, large English domestic revival style dwelling’’.
