Mobility scooters evolve
Mobility scooters were among the first forms of transport to embrace the electric vehicle revolution. Today their popularity continues to rise as more people discover the benefits.
Designed so people with physical limitations could get around without relying on taxis, buses or family members, the first mobility scooters arrived in New Zealand in the early 1970s.
They have come a long way since, with improved comfort and stability, more battery power and being easier than ever to use.
One of the widest ranges in Christchurch can be found at More Mobility, which has several dozen models at its showroom on Blenheim Rd.
More Mobility co-owner Russell Thomas says the ability of mobility scooters to help users with shopping, attend appointments, visit friends and family or just enjoy some fresh air has made them vital for many people to live independent, happy lives.
He says a typical mobility scooter can travel up to 35 kilometres on each battery charge and costs $3800 to $5000 new. Larger scooters are capable of up to 50km between charges and range from about $5000 to $7500.
There are no warrants of fitness or registration requirements and they charge easily at home, so over time they become a very low-cost form of transport.
‘‘First-time buyers often find many more uses for their scooter than expected so we usually recommend going one size up if they’re not sure. That way they can take longer trips and be more comfortable,’’ Russell says.
‘‘We offer home demonstrations and provide tuition so the user is confident and understands how and where to ride the scooter.’’
More Mobility also has second-hand scooters. Fully serviced and with new batteries, these start at $1700.
Russell recommends annual servicing, or twiceyearly if the scooter is heavily relied upon. Servicing can be done at the owner’s home and for most models costs $99. A twice-yearly servicing programme is available at $140.
‘‘Scooters are very easy to use and cost effective,’’ Russell says. ‘‘More than 3000 of our clients use them each day.’’
