Comfortable beds owe much to Beautyrest’s work

-

Pocket springs are such an integral part of mattresses it’s easy to overlook what a revolution they were when first patented by Beautyrest almost 120 years ago.

At the time, the company wrapped each spring by hand, pushing the price so high that mattresses with the technology were affordable only for the wealthiest in society – one reason they featured in luxury cabins on the Titanic.

Beautyrest developed a ‘‘spring machine’’ in 1925 to bring down the cost, and it wasn’t long before testimonials started to roll in from the likes of Henry Ford, H.G. Wells, Thomas Edison and George Bernard Shaw.

History was made again in the 1950s when Beautyrest released the first queen and king-size mattresses.

Then, in the late 1990s, the ‘‘bowling ball mattress’’ came along, with TV ads showing how even dropping a bowling ball on one of their mattresses wouldn’t disturb the pins nearby.

Beautyrest has since updated its mattresses with more opulent materials and introduced what it calls ‘‘Recharge Technology’’, a pioneering combination of memory foam, ‘‘Smart Response’’ pocket coils and a proprietary ‘‘AirCool’’ mattress design.

Bedworld owner Mark Elliott says Beautyrest is one of the most trusted brands shoppers can choose for longlasting comfort.

‘‘They do a fantastic job of eliminating roll-together and giving support right to the edge of the bed.

‘‘You can choose from plush, medium, firm or extra-firm mattresses and know you’re not going to get that sagging or drop-off you might find with lesserknown brands,’’ he says.

Beautyrest is one of Bedworld’s best value options, too, with the Ferry Rd store currently discounting its entire Beautyrest range by 40-50 per cent.

Prices for Sleepmaker and Sealy Posturepedic beds have also been slashed by up to 40 per cent.

Bedworld sells mainly New Zealandmade beds and has featured Beautyrest in its lineup since opening 20 years ago.

to success lies partly in the large number of coils used. These react individually to varying degrees of pressure, which is especially important for comfort around the hip and shoulder areas.

But with so many brands and styles to choose from, Mark says the best starting point is usually a simple visit to a wellstocked showroom.

‘‘We encourage people to come in, flop around on a few models and get a feel for the differences. We’re always happy to explain things and we’ve got a really good selection in store.’’

Materials such as memory foam, wool and latex each have their advantages, and in some cases bases are packed with features too.

Bedworld’s ‘‘lifestyle’’ beds, for instance, have electric-powered bases that tilt, bend at the knee and, depending on the model, have massage, anti-snore and anti-gravity settings.

The adjustable beds were created for their medical benefits and are still the top choice for pregnant women, people with reflux and those recovering from surgery. However, a luxurious makeover in recent years has widened their appeal to include anyone who just enjoys relaxing in bed.

Bedworld also has a wide selection of bedroom furniture, children’s beds and options for the spare room.

Finance is available from no deposit with interest-free terms of up to 18 months.
