Archer rebuked for segway ride

-

Jofra Archer’s first overseas cricket test for England has become a memorable one, but not for the reasons most expected.

England’s fast bowler ran foul of team management before the match even got under way at Bay Oval, Mt Maunganui, when he was rebuked for riding a segway on the outfield, the Sunday Mail reported.

Archer borrowed the segway from Sky’s camera operator before play on Thursday and took it for a spin on the outfield, to the amusement of some and the bemusement of others.

The coin toss had already been made and the playing XIs confirmed, which means if Archer had suffered an injury on his ride England wouldn’t have been able to replace him.

The Sunday Mail confirmed Archer was spoken

‘‘The two-wheeled self-balancing segways are routinely used by camera crew, and England were unhappy that Archer risked injury moments before the series got under way – especially in front of ECB chief executive Tom Harrison, who has flown in for the first test,’’ cricket writer Lawrence Booth wrote.

Barbados born and raised, Archer, 24, was expected to play a significant part in the first test against the Black Caps after snaring 22 wickets from his first four tests against Australia and bowling some rapid spells in the Whangarei warmup matches.

But on a docile Bay Oval surface with the Kookaburra ball he found it hard work against the stubborn New Zealand batting lineup.
