Dead, missing and injured

-

The Dallow family said last night that the New Zealand Police have confirmed two members of their Adelaide family died in Monday’s deadly volcanic eruption on Whakaari/White Island.

Gavin Dallow’s body has been found and identified. The family of Zoe Hosking has been told she is presumed dead with her body on White Island.

Hosking’s mother Lisa Dallow is in hospital in Hamilton. A statement from the family said: ‘‘We mourn the loss of Gavin and Zoe. Gavin was a wonderful son and brother . . . Our hearts break at the loss of Zoe at such a young age. We know her loss will also devastate her school community and the local Girl Guides, of which she was an active member."

Earlier yesterday, a mother and her daughter were the first confirmed Australian victims of

Monday’s deadly volcanic eruption.

The family of Julie Richards, 47, and her 20-year-old daughter, Jessica, were contacted by police yesterday and told the pair had died. Richards and her daughter were from Brisbane and had been on the Ovation of the Seas cruise.

Of the 47 people on the island at the time of the eruption on Monday afternoon, at least six have died, many were injured, including 25 critically, and eight are missing, feared dead.

Members of two Sydney families are missing, feared dead.

Anthony and Kristine Langford and their children Jesse, 19, and Winona, 17, were first reported missing. Yesterday, Jesse was reportedly found alive at a hospital.

Another Sydney family, Barbara and Martin Hollander and their children Matthew, 13, and Berend, 16, are also missing.

A 5-year-old is also believed to be missing; it is unknown if he was on the island at the time.

The Red Cross Family Links website is an unofficial register of those missing and unaccounted for. The charity cautioned the list was not ‘‘necessarily accurate’’ because it was created by family and friends of those believed to have been impacted by the eruption.

People were marked as missing until their status was changed to ‘‘I am alive’’ or they were removed from the list.

Here are some of the victims, people injured, and those still unaccounted for.

INJURED: Jake Milbank

‘‘This normally passionate energetic young man, who has a love for anything ocean, was in his element when this tragedy occurred,’’ the description on Milbank’s Givealittle page reads.

The money raised would go towards his recovery. He is currently at Middlemore Hospital burns unit, surrounded by family.

The creator of the page said his family wanted to thank everyone for the support they had given.

The page also read: ‘‘Jake is a tour guide for White Island Tours.

‘‘He was on the island when it erupted, and has sustained burns to 80 per cent of his body.’’

DECEASED: Gavin Dallow and Zoe Hosking

New Zealand Police have confirmed two members of an Adelaide family from Australia have died. Gavin Dallow’s body has been found and identified. The family of 15-year-old Zoe Hoskings has been told she is presumed dead with her body on White Island. Her mum, Lisa Dallow, is in Waikato Hospital with severe burns.

MISSING: The Hollander family

Martin Hollander, 48, his wife Barbara, 50, and their teenage children Berend, 16, and Matthew, 13, were listed on the Family Links site as missing.

Australian media reported the children were in year 8 and year 10 at Knox Grammar School in Wahroonga, in Sydney’s Upper North Shore, the same school their father had attended. The school’s headmaster Scott James said in a statement: ‘‘It is with a heavy heart that I can confirm that a Knox family is currently unaccounted for . . . in the eruption.’’

Barbara, Berend, and Matthew’s places of birth were listed as Chicago in the United States on the Red Cross website. Martin was the freight initiatives manager at Transport for New South Wales.

Matthew was actively involved in cadets and represented the school in basketball, squash and debating. Berend was ‘‘actively engaged’’ in sport, with a developing passion for AFL, cadets and baseball.

DECEASED: Julie and Jessica Richards

Julie Richards, 47, and her daughter Jessica, 20, were the first Australians confirmed dead following the eruption.

New Zealand police contacted family of the Brisbane pair yesterday and confirmed their bodies had been found.

ABC reported Richards and her daughter visited the volcano during their holiday cruise on the Ovation of the Seas ship.

Family had struggled to get information about the pair following the eruption, calling seven different hospitals.

Jessica was a veterinary technology student at the University of Queensland and a promising Australian Rules football player.

DECEASED: Hayden Marshall-Inman

Whakata¯ne man and tour guide Hayden Marshall-Inman was killed by the eruption. He was the first of six confirmed deaths.

Former mayor Tony Bonne said he knew Marshall-Inman and his family personally: ‘‘It is very sad that he has lost his life.’’

His body is believed to still be on the island.

His brother said the family has had no communication with authorities to discuss his recovery. ‘‘Our thoughts and prayers are with everyone but we just want them back . . . off the island,’’ said the man, who wanted to remain anonymous.

MISSING: Tipene Maangi

The 23-year-old tour guide was among those missing on the island still. He had been working for White Island Tours for a few months and a family member said he loved his job.

His wha¯nau were praying for his return and held a vigil at Whakata¯ne wharf on Tuesday morning. They then gathered at Te Ma¯nuka Tu¯tahi Marae to say karakia and were ‘‘holding out hope’’.

MISSING: Members of the Langford family

The family of four from North Sydney in New South Wales,

Australia, is among those unaccounted for. Anthony Langford, 51, his wife, Kristine, and their two teenage children Jesse, 19, and Winona, 17, were marked as missing on the Family Links website.

Yesterday, Jesse was reportedly found alive in a hospital.

A family friend of the Langfords said the local community in Sydney was ‘‘in shock’’.

‘‘[It is] just a horrible waiting period really. We are all shattered by it.’’

The man, who declined to be named, said his daughter was close friends with Winona.

He said the Langfords were a ‘‘tight-knit’’ family.

‘‘They are a lovely bunch of people. These guys were always doing stuff together.’’

The 17-year-old is a talented artist who had recently won a major arts prize for a painting of her friend’s pet rabbit. The painting was then made into a 3-metre-tall banner, which was erected in the central city.

INJURED: Jesse Langford

The 19-year-old Australian was reportedly found alive, after original fears he was missing.

Jesse’s former school principal, Anthony Duncan from Marist College North Shore, described the teenager as a ‘‘talented and popular student’’ who finished his time at the school as house captain.

‘‘Please have the Langford family in your prayers,’’ Duncan said in a message to parents and carers. The school also offered counselling to students who needed assistance.

INJURED: Newlyweds Lauren and Matt Urey

Lauren and Matt Urey from the United States were on their honeymoon in New Zealand at the time. They were travelling on the Royal Caribbean cruise ship that had docked in Tauranga before venturing out on a day tour to the island.

The couple were rescued from the island and rushed to hospital with severe burns, according to Lauren’s mother, Barbara Barham.

Barham and her husband have travelled from the US to be with their injured daughter.

Barham told Stuff yesterday her daughter was unconscious and in a ‘‘very serious condition’’ while her son-in-law was in a ‘‘serious condition but conscious’’.

She declined to comment further.

‘‘We are just seeing our daughter and we are trying to work through how difficult this is going to be for us.’’

INJURED: Ivy Kohn Reed and Rick Reed

Fifty-one-year-old Ivy Kohn Reed from Massachusetts in the United States has been located in hospital, her brother confirmed. She was marked as ‘‘I am alive’’ on the Red Cross website.

Rick Reed, believed to be Ivy’s husband, was not included on the Red Cross list yesterday morning but it was understood he was recovering in hospital after suffering burns to more than 30 per cent of his body.

Family members shared updates on the pair’s condition on social media, saying they were able to speak and were stable, but underwent surgeries to clean the burned areas.

It was understood they were going to be transferred to Christchurch Hospital.

INJURED: Jason Griffiths

Jason Griffiths, a 33-year-old Woolworths employee from Coffs Harbour in New South Wales, Australia, was rescued from the island on Monday.

His family confirmed he was among the injured and was currently seriously ill in hospital.

Griffiths, who was interested in science, had travelled to the island with his friends Karla Mathews and Richard Elzer. Mathews and Elzer were missing, Jarzynski said.

Griffiths had been talking about the trip since last year.

‘‘He loved travelling. He loved seeing the world.’’
