-

The Volts moved top of the Super Smash table after their strong allround performance as they trounced Canterbury by 51 runs in the Super Smash match at Alexandra’s Molyneux Park yesterday.

Josh Finnie struck a classy unbeaten 71 from just 36 balls as the home side poured on 190 for five battiung first.

The Otago innings could have subsided at 125 for five after 14 overs but Finnie with able assistance Michael Rippon added 65 together in the final six overs to ensure a l;efty target for the Kings to chase.

They proved not up to the scoreboard pressure despite a good wicket as they lost wickets steadily to be dismissed for 139 in 18.5 overs.

Michael Rae taking 3-25, including the final wicket of Henry Shipley to an outstanding boundary catch by Neil Broom.

Meanwhile Devon Conway’s golden summer continued at

Eden Park outer oval top-scoring with 78 not out to steer Wellington Firebirds to a clinical sevenwicket victory over Auckland Aces.

The star Firebirds opener hit two consecutive boundaries to comfortably reach the 134-run target with seven balls and seven wickets to spare.

The Aces made a positive start to the match after electing to bat first, Martin Guptill scoring 42 from 34.

Wellington Firebirds 137-3 (Devon Conway 78 no, Jimmy Neesham 23no) beat Auckland Aces 133-9 (Martin Guptill 42, Will Somerville 21) by seven wickets Otago Volts 190-5 (Josh Finnie

71 no, Hamish Rutherford 37, M Rippon 23; C McConchie 2-32 ) beat Canterbury Kings 139 (Cam Fletcher 37, Leo Carter 33 Stephen Murdoch 25; Michael Rae

3-25, Todd Muller 2-29, Anaru Kitchen 2-20) by 51 runs in 18.5 overs.

But the opener received no support from his middle order, five wickets falling in 22 balls midway through the Aces’ innings, restricting their chances of posting a competitive total.

The Aces finished their innings on 133-9, which was not enough to trouble the secondplace Firebirds, particularly with Conway in a rich vein of scoring.

After starting the men’s Super Smash with scores of 0 and 2, the 28-year-old has now hit 60-plus in his last three games.
