Physiotherapy course eases back pain
Back pain is a common complaint. Who of us doesn’t experience it at some point in our lives? In fact, research shows most people do.
If you or your family members have or had back or neck pain and it’s slowing you down, then visit Muscle People in Christchurch and take part in their Dynamic Spines programme.
Muscle People physiotherapist and director Laurie Moore says Dynamic Spines is an exciting and effective approach to resolving and preventing lowback pain.
‘‘Spinal strength and stability is the focus of the programme, concentrating on the deep core muscles in the low back,’’ she says. ‘‘It’s based on the most recent research, emphasising the importance of hands-on techniques, education and, most importantly, exercise.’’
The programme is designed to move participants from pain to a place where they are confident to move in dynamic activities and significantly decrease the rate of pain recurrence.
The small-group exercise programme is led by physiotherapists or exercise physiologists who will address core stability and spinal muscle control. Clear progressions are made each week that will cross over to everyday life.

‘‘More than 80 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from a significant episode of low-back pain during their lifetime. Of these, 84 per cent are likely to have a recurrence of back pain within a year. Research shows that those who undergo a specific spinal strengthening programme are almost three times better off,’’ Moore says.
Benefits of completing the Dynamic Spines course include:
❚ Stabilising your spine
❚ Increasing your core strength
❚ Improving your confidence
❚ Correcting causative factors that may relate to ongoing pain and recurrent episodes.
Before you join the Dynamic Spines programme, a physiotherapist will assess your individual needs and ensure you can get the best out of the programme.
The programme is then over two levels.
‘‘The first level is all about learning to locate and then strengthen the appropriate muscles. The physiotherapist will help each person to achieve this based on their individual diagnosis and ability.
‘‘The second level focuses on turning those learned skills into habitual movements and improving strength. Home exercise is also an integral part of the programme,’’ Moore says.
The Dynamic Spines programme is designed for people of all ages and fitness levels who have back or neck pain, or who suffer from core and postural weaknesses.
