Boris welcomes son into world – then gets straight back to work

-

Boris Johnson will delay taking paternity leave until later this year to deal with the coronavirus pandemic after becoming a father again yesterday at the age of 55.

Downing Street announced that the prime minister’s fiancee, Carrie Symonds, 32, had given birth to a son just three days after Johnson returned to work after his recuperation from Covid-19.

It is understood that Johnson was present throughout the delivery before returning to work in Downing Street. A spokesman said that both mother and baby were doing well, but declined to provide further details or say whether Symonds and the baby were still in hospital. Johnson, he added, would not take his two-week statutory paternity leave until later in the year as ministers continue to grapple with the response to the virus. The couple plan to continue living in the flat above No 11 Downing Street where they have lived since Johnson became prime minister nine months ago. The baby was apparently conceived within a week of him taking up the role.

The news was welcomed by political allies and opponents. Rishi Sunak, the chancellor, said it was ‘‘great to hear Downing Street is getting a new resident’’ while Sir Keir Starmer, the Labour leader, described it as ‘‘wonderful news’’.

The Queen sent her good wishes while David Cameron, the last prime minister to become a father in Downing

Street, said: ‘‘Sam and I are thrilled for you both! Sorry we didn’t leave the cot – but the climbing frame should still be in the garden!’’

The Archbishop of Canterbury tweeted: ‘‘Wishing them every blessing and happiness.’’

Announcing the birth, a spokeswoman said: ‘‘The prime minister and Ms Symonds are thrilled to announce the birth of a healthy baby boy at a London hospital earlier this morning.’’ She added: ‘‘The PM and Ms Symonds would like to thank the fantastic NHS maternity team.’’

The birth explains Downing Street’s inability to confirm whether Johnson would take part in prime minister’s questions yesterday. It led to speculation that he was still weak after his spell in intensive care.
