Million-dollar boost for cricket and netball

-

Grassroots cricket and netball have benefited to the tune of $1 million.

ANZ Bank New Zealand yesterday announced its Good Sports Grants programme, pledging $1 million to support the return of club and junior cricket and netball following the Covid-19-imposed hiatus.

Cricket cut short its season in midMarch while club and junior netball has no confirmed date for the delayed start to its season.

Both sports rely on gaming funding to help its grassroots participants, with NZ Cricket chief executive David White saying that figure was around $8 million last season. With gaming funding heavily reduced amid the pandemic, clubs will increasingly be under financial pressure.

On Sunday, Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson announced a $265 million support package via Sport NZ as part of the 2020 Budget, in response to the financial pain dealt by Covid-19.

All local netball and cricket clubs or teams can apply for support through the ANZ grant by visiting the bank’s website. It could be anything from uniforms and equipment to funding to help with ground maintenance.

‘‘We want to help remove the financial barrier to help ensure as many Kiwi kids get back to playing netball and cricket safely, and as soon as possible,’’ ANZ NZ chief executive Antonia Watson said.

Netball New Zealand chief executive Jennie Wyllie said the funding was timely to help community sport get back on its feet.

‘‘Most sports teams haven’t been able to play for almost two months and as netballers we can’t wait for our teams to return to the court, and this grant will help ensure as many teams as possible can.

‘‘If local clubs and teams are struggling financially we urge you to apply.’’

White said the organisation viewed community cricket as an absolute priority.

‘‘The grassroots part of the game represents the life and blood of our sport and its health is critical to the future of the game at all levels, including the Black Caps and White Ferns.

‘‘We’re very grateful for this assistance. We know circumstances are tough for families and clubs and that this support will make a significant and immediate difference.’’
