More injury woes for the Warriors

- Mat Kermeen

Just when the Warriors thought it couldn’t get any worse, it has, but Kodi Nikorima says the club doesn’t want pity from anyone.

With confirmation utility back Adam Keighran suffered a knee injury at training on Monday night, the club has now lost three players in a horror four-day injury stretch.

Keighran missed the Warriors season-opening loss against Newcastle but started at centre in the second-round defeat to the Canberra Raiders.

Keighran, who joined the club from the Penrith Panthers in 2019, is awaiting scans to reveal the full extent of the injury, according to Nikorima.

Nikorima, who confirmed Keighran had been training at centre, refused to be drawn into the controversy around the NRL refusing to allow the Warriors to bring in loan players to cover for their middle forward injury crisis.

A decision many felt was tough on the club given it had relocated – away from their families – to Australia for an unknown length of time.

‘‘That’s up to the NRL,’’ Nikorima said.

‘‘I don’t want to harp on too much about it, I don’t want teams out there or anyone feeling sorry for us. We’ve committed to this, our families understand where we’re coming from.’’

Nikorima, who started the opening two games from the bench, has been training in the halves where himself, Blake Green and Chanel Harris-Tavita are fighting for just two starting spots.

He put the Warriors shocking injury toll down to a simple case of bad luck.

‘‘Injuries happen. Obviously it’s sad for the people that do get injured but that comes with playing rugby league,’’ Nikorima said.

Meanwhile, the NRL will be played out of just six venues until at least the end of round nine, with Sydney, Gosford, Brisbane, Townsville and Melbourne to host matches.

The league confirmed yesterday that Bankwest Stadium, Campbelltown and the Central Coast would be used in NSW, as well as Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium, Townsville’s new stadium and Melbourne’s AAMI Park.
