Scooters’ time is here
The future of independent transport isn’t the flying machines of The Jetsons, it’s electric-powered mobility scooters, and they’re already here.
Mobility scooters were the first to embrace the electricvehicle revolution, having been available in New Zealand since the 1970s.
Today’s options are streets ahead of early models though, being extremely easy to use, smooth-running and stable, and with batteries on larger models that are capable of travelling up to 60 kilometres between charges.
There are no warrant of fitness or registration requirements, so over time they become a cost-effective form of transport.
More Mobility has one of the widest selections in Christchurch with more than 30 new and used scooters from five brands.
More Mobility’s showroom manager, Russell Thomas, says while some people use a mobility scooter as their main form of transport, others continue to drive a car and save their scooter for shorter trips to the shops, park or to visit friends and family.
How far a person can travel depends on the size of both the scooter and user, he says.
‘‘But we’re confident that if matched appropriately, the rider will get tired before the scooter. We always explain the options and provide ample tuition.’’
In addition to providing easier movement, mobility scooters often provide psychological benefits through greater independence. Being able to park right outside your destination is the icing on the cake, Russell says. ‘‘We get wonderful feedback all the time. More than 3000 of our clients use them each day.’’
More Mobility has new lightweight scooters from $1690, through to heftier models priced up to $7490. Second-hand scooters start at $1800 and come fully serviced with new batteries and a 12-month warranty.
Servicing is available at More Mobility and is recommended annually or every six months if the scooter is relied on heavily.
