Algae river warning
A healthwarning for the Selwyn River (Waikirikiri) has been issued following the discovery of potentially toxic algae. The warning, by the Canterbury District Health Board, is in place at Whitecliffs Domain (camping area) and upstream of Whitecliffs Rd (picnic area). People should avoid the area and keep animals, particularly dogs, away from the water until the healthwarning is lifted. People should also stay out of thewater. Canterbury MedicalOfficer of Health Dr Cheryl Brunton said the algaewould look like dark brown to blackmats. It can produce toxins harmful to animals and people.
