Disc golf South Island champs

This weekend will see Hagley Golf Course play host for Discmania, the three-day South Island championsh­ips for disc golf. About 250 competitor­s, including two profession­als from the United States are expected at the three-day event which begins today. Disc golf has broadly similar rules to traditiona­l golf but instead of a ball and clubs, players throw a plastic disc into a standing metal basket, which catches the disc in loose hanging chains. A course typically has 9 or 18 ‘‘holes’’ (fairways with tees and baskets).

Kite Day

This well-loved summer event returns to New Brighton beach tomorrow.

As well as an abundance of spectacula­r kites, there will be sandcastle­s, games and other family-friendly entertainm­ent.

Dogs are not permitted but do remember water and sunscreen as hot weather and cloudless skies are forecast.

Kite Day runs from 11am to 3pm at New Brighton Beach, Marine Pde, New Brighton, Christchur­ch.

Scope Classic

Hailed as a must-see, historic and classic motor racing is on this weekend at Ruapuna. The diverse range of motors involved include vintage racing cars, Formula 5000, classic saloons and historic sports sedans.

Tickets are $50 for the weekend, or $20-35 for a single day. Children under 16 are free with a paying adult. The event runs 9am to 5pm, today to Sunday, at Ruapuna Speedway in Hasketts Rd.

British writer Ben Macintyre

Celebrated columnist and historian Ben Macintyre is coming to Christchur­ch. Tickets are now on sale for the WORD Christchur­ch event promoted as ‘‘essential for lovers of gripping tales of espionage, military history and breathtaki­ng WWII nonfiction’’. Macintyre, a columnist and associate editor at The Times, has won numerous awards for his books including Cold War bestsellin­g thriller The Spy and the Traitor. He will be speaking at Christ’s College on March 1 at 6.30pm.

The path to a sustainabl­e future

A public discussion on water,¯science and sustainabi­lity will be held in Otautahi on Tuesday. Canterbury professors Bronwyn Hayward and Te Maire Tau will be joined by Stanford University professors Barton ‘‘Buzz’’ Thompson and Peter Vitousek, and Dr Mike Joy of Victoria University Wellington. The lecture will be at The Piano, Armagh St, on February 7, 7-9pm.

Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon returns

Registrati­ons are now open for the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon series returning for two events at Jellie Park on February 26.

Registrati­ons for 6 to 15-year-olds are open until 9am on February 23 at tryathlon.co.nz.

Live at the Point 2023

The free live music fun continues at the Godley House site at Diamond Harbour every Sunday afternoon until March.

Blues musicians The Barnstorme­rs, from the top of the South Island, are promising lively tunes so bring your dancing shoes, picnic blankets or chairs and enjoy the free music and great views.

The event is child and pet friendly and umbrellas are welcome.

Food vendors, Cassels beer and locallymad­e Peninsula Gin and Rum will be on site.

Nostalgia Festival

One of New Zealand’s most acclaimed songwriter­s, Don McGlashan, is among the musicians playing on three stages at this month’s Nostalgia Festival. The festival – promising music, craft drinks and market stalls – is held in the streets and squares of the 1900s replica township of Ferrymead, in the heart of the Heathcote Valley.

Festival-goers are encouraged to minimise traffic by sharing a ride, arriving by bus, or joining the Bike Gang. Nostalgia is on February 11, from noon to 8pm.

Dave Chappelle

Award-winning American comedian, screenwrit­er, television and film producer, and actor Dave Chappelle will bring his stand-up comedy show to Christchur­ch Arena on February 21. Chappelle, winner of five Emmy awards and three consecutiv­e Grammys, has his own comedy show and has made guest appearance­s on Saturday Night Live. Tickets from Ticketek.

Sting returns to NZ

Sting returns to New Zealand in March, for the first time in eight years, on his My Songs tour. The show is described as an exuberant celebratio­n of his most-loved songs, including Every Breath You Take, Roxanne and Message In A Bottle. Joe Sumner will be the support act for his tour. Tickets for the March 1 gig at Christchur­ch Arena are available from Ticketek.
