Mama Hooch sexual assaults: Three new complainants come forward
Police are investigating three fresh complaints relating to incidents at Christchurch’s Mama Hooch bar. Brothers Danny and Roberto Jaz were found to have drugged and sexually assaulted dozens of women during their time managing the Christchurch bar. Some were raped and filmed as the acts were carried out. Since the Operation Sinatra trial in February last year, police had received three further complaints of historic incidents alleged to have occurred at the bar, Detective Inspector Scott Anderson said. Three new complainants had come forward about separate incidents, he said. A survivor of the Jaz brothers’ offending, who cannot be named, told The Press that she was pleased to see others had come forward with their own complaints. “I really feel for them. The trial was really difficult, but the way we were treated by police, victim support and the media really helped.” The woman said coming forward could be daunting but that she commended those who did. “I admire them. It takes bravery and courage. I understand what it’s like. I didn’t know how it would all play out, but being on the other side of it now, it’s given me a lot of closure and confidence.” Her advice for anyone else thinking of coming forward was simple – do it. “Don’t hesitate. The support will be there for you.” Police were continuing to investigate and would not comment further, they said.
