Aussie Just Cala eyes Jewels berth

- TAYLER STRONG

Just Cala, who won her first race at Gore, is the next Australian pacer in line for an invitation to the Harness Jewels at Ashburton on May 30.

Her Victoria trainer Amanda Turnbull is keen for Just Cala to make the trip for the 4-year-old mares section, said Darrin Williams, the racing manager for Harness Racing New Zealand. Just Cala would be a travelling companion for stablemate Glenferrie Bronte, who has been invited for the 3-year-old fillies section.

Just Cala, as Cala, won at Gore as a 2-yearold in March, 2013 when trained at Ladbrooks by Dean Taylor.

Cala also won at Forbury Park as a 3-yearold before she was sold to Australia. She won the Breeders Crown Final at Melton in August. The daughter of Art Major-Lilsistar has won seven of her 19 starts in Australia.

The 3-year-old Burnaholeinmypocket is also in line for a Harness Jewels invitation.

The Andy Gath-trained

Bet- tor’s Delight gelding won a semi-final of the Breeders Crown as a 2-year-old (Australian time) in August. He has won five of his 12 starts.

Hughie Green and Mighty Flying Major have been withdrawn from the 3-year-old colts and gelding section of the Jewels. Advance bookings for the Harness Jewels meeting is running high with tickets for the main marquee sold out at $220 (each), Williams said. The marquee can seat 306.
