Man jailed for ‘severe assault’ on woman

An intoxicate­d man who attacked a female and dragged her down the stairs was jailed after appearing in the Invercargi­ll District Court yesterday.

Judge Christina Cook sentenced Garry Robert Te Raki Hawea Gordon to six and a half months’ jail, ordered him to pay $28 reparation and $500 emotional harm reparation for assault with intent to injure on January 17.

The court was told Gordon returned home after he had been drinking. The victim came home separately and was locked outside. She knocked and Gordon, enraged, grabbed her by the left arm and dragged her down the steps and struck her hard above the left eye.

Though Gordon was remorseful, the judge said it was a severe assault. A protection order was also granted.

Assault

Tammie Mac Scott, 29, was sentenced to two and a half months’ community detention for assaulting a man by punching and hitting him.

Jarrod Douglas Tuffley, 24, meat worker, was remanded to reappear on June 9 for assault on May 19.

Christophe­r Graham Moore, 27, was remanded to June 10 for assault on May 11.

Peter Douglas Sinclair, 18, of Opio, was sentenced to 273 hours’ community work, nine months’ supervisio­n, disqualifi­ed from driving for six months, fined $375, and ordered to pay $750 emotional harm reparation when he appeared for assaulting a female by headbuttin­g her and fracturing her nose, driving with a sustained loss of traction on November 5 last year, and driving with a breath-alcohol level of 351mcg on January 31.

Daniel Christophe­r Gillett, was sentenced to five months’ community detention and nine months’ supervisio­n for assault with a weapon, namely a beer bottle, on February 7.

Sarah-Leonie Ohuia Moeau was sentenced to two and a half months’ community detention for assault and obstructin­g police on February 15.

Breach

Jeffrey David Chambers, 28, of Tuatapere, was remanded to reappear on August 6 for breaching a zero-alcohol licence on April 18.

John Brent Taumata, 32, was sentenced to six months’ jail for breaching release conditions on July 18 and December 3 last year.

Drugs

Clayton Peter Roe, 52, caregiver, of Tuatapere, was fined $800 for possessing and cultivatin­g cannabis on April 21.

Caleb Wallace Metternich, 19, presser, was sentenced to 100 hours’ community work for possessing utensils on October 3 last year.

Receiving

Craig Peter Shaw, 20, shearer, was sentenced to 150 hours’ community work for receiving stolen firearms between September and October last year.

Wounding

Cody James Cowie was remanded to August 6 for sentencing for intentiona­l damage of a TV cable and wounding a man with reckless disregard by stabbing him in the leg on December 13 last year.

Threatenin­g

Noel Gilbert Peachey, 52, was remanded to June 9 for behaving in a threatenin­g manner on April 24.

Obscene language

Paul Alistair Harvey, 36, was fined $400 for using obscene language to offend a woman on April 17.

Driving

Bradley Leonard Goomes, 17, drainlayer, was sentenced to 150 hours’ community work and disqualifi­ed from driving for 10 months for dangerous driving on State Highway 6 at Five Rivers and driving at speeds of 151kmh in a defective vehicle.

David Andrew Lord, 33, salesman, was remanded to August 4 for sentence for dangerous driving, refusing to give his name and a blood specimen on March 17.

Christophe­r Stanley Boivin, 31, farm hand, was remanded to July 10 for sentence for careless driving and driving with a blood-alcohol level of 150mg on March 7.

Ethan Arthur Reynolds, 20, was fined $450 and disqualifi­ed for six months for driving while suspended on May 3 in Tay St.

Hayden James Birch, 21, of Morton Mains, was fined $500 and disqualifi­ed or six months for driving while disqualifi­ed on May 6.

Ricky Huotahi Kereama, 28, was sentenced to 50 hours’ community work and disqualifi­ed for six months for driving while suspended on March 20.

Anthony John Ladbrook, was sentenced to four months’ community detention and nine months’ supervisio­n and disqualifi­ed for 10 months and ordered to apply for a zero alcohol licence for driving while disqualifi­ed and with a breathalco­hol level of 794mcg on February 21, and resisting police and disorderly behaviour on March 8. On a breach of community work in October last year he was convicted and discharged.

Michael Pascoe, 22, mechanic, was fined $350 and disqualife­d from driving for six months for sustained loss of traction at Sandy Point on April 4.

Drink-driving

Bevan William Ferguson, 49, driver, was fined $1300, disqualifi­ed from driving for 10 months and ordered to pay $2473.34 reparation for driving with a blood-alcohol level of 280mg and driving carelessly on April 10.

Paul Russell Shanks, 45, meat worker, was fined $1100 and disqualifi­ed for 12 months for driving with a breath-alcohol level of 785mcg on April 23.

Merana Monica Marie Hei Hei, 37, 909mcg on April 19. Fined $1100 and disqualifi­ed for eight months.

Samuel John Wayne Carroll, 48, meatworker, of Ohai, 889mcg on April 26. Remanded to August 6 for sentence.

Kimberley Maree Rangi, 32, 939mcg on May 17. Fined $1000 and disqualifi­ed for seven months.

Reuben James Leroy McPherson, 20, pest control worker, of Te Anau, 586mcg on April 3. Sentenced to 100 hours’ community work and disqualifi­ed for 10 months. An order was made to confiscate his vehicle.

Tania Maree Broome, 48, farmer of Grove Bush, 624mcg on May 13. Fined $800 and disqualifi­ed for seven months.
