Winton group ‘fighting for its life’

- MARY WITSEY

The Winton Area Promotions group meets tonight to fight for its life, as a lack of volunteers puts the organisation’s future in jeopardy.

President Bryce Williams said he was concerned about the organisation and feared if more support did not come from people in the town the group could fail.

‘‘It’s on the cards. Sometimes we don’t even have enough people at our meeting for a quorum.

‘‘We’ve thought about merging with the Winton Business Association, or maybe just folding all together, it’s really a case of getting more people involved.’’

The group was responsible for producing brochures to promote the town, installing signs at the entrances of Winton and organising events such as the Wintonwide garage sale, Winton open day and the Winton market day.

However, a core of six people had been struggling to keep the group running for some time.

‘‘We’ve done a lot of good in the town over the years, but it just seems to be the same people doing all the work.’’

Some of the older members were now ready to move on, he said, and it was time for others to step up and get involved.

‘‘It’s about getting new ideas and more energy – even just people to volunteer to provide manpower on the ground at our events would be good.

‘‘The events we organise do attract people to the town. It’s about bringing people here and promoting Winton.’’

The group would meet tonight at the Winton RSA lounge, next to the Winton Bakery, at 7.30pm and Williams encouraged people to gather and show their support.

‘‘I’d encourage people to come along. If they’ve got ideas to offer, or just want to be able to help us out occasionally, it would be great to see them.’’
