Ohai-Nightcaps unbeaten with win over Marist B

- JOHN LANGFORD

Ohai-Nightcaps maintained their unbeaten record in Southland’s division two club rugby competition on Saturday when they beat Marist B 27-17 at Nightcaps.

Coach Rodger Eade said it was not a commanding win, but still a pleasing victory.

‘‘It was a good game, they had the better of us for long periods but we stuck at it and managed the win. We were a bit flat, but a win’s a win,’’ he said.

‘‘Lock John Broughton and fullback Tyler Johnston were outstanding, all the backs went well with the little ball we had.’’

The Pioneer and Mossburn Stags game at Newman Park was expected to be another close one.

However, Mossburn manager Warrick McMeekan did not tread lightly when summing up the performance.

‘‘To put it bluntly we played like a bunch of sheilas.’’

Pioneer led 21-0 at halftime and 55-5 at fulltime. This was the third game in a row that Pioneer have racked up a half century of points.

The game at Tulloch Park between Mataura and Blues B also shaped as a difficult result to predict.

The previous time these two teams met was only four weeks ago with Mataura winning 11-5, but this round’s version of the Blues produced an inspired bunch.

The town team led 24-0 at halftime and pushed on to win 52-14. Coach Simon Frisby was delighted. ‘‘The boys put in a really good 80-minute effort, their defence was as good as their attack.

‘‘Maka Mohi was outstanding on the wing and the Borland boys, Jeremy and Josh, did the family proud on their father, Richard’s, 50th birthday. Richard is a former Blues stalwart and Southland prop.’’

Mataura coach Doug Clark was very pleased with his boys, they put a lot of phases together in the second half.

Mataura’s standout performers were halfback Jordan Ramage and Cole Birse up front.

Waikiwi beat Donovan Park.

When these two sides played each other earlier in the season Waikiwi beat Collegiate 36-35 with a last minute try.

After a couple of average games recently Waikiwi coach Derek Manson said his team produced an improved performance at the weekend.

Waikiwi’s best player was Kyle Mckenzie, with good support from Michael Shepherd and Vaughan McKay.
