Soultaker tough in countdown

- TIM RYAN

The Soultaker is in the hands of some of the best in the business.

The training partnership of Donna Logan and Chris Gibbs has been going great guns and jockey Opie Bosson is the man for the occasion.

When they get together they form a powerful combination.

That won’t be evident in the Countdown to Karaka Million 1200 tomorrow but it will be when the money is up for the $1 million race on January 24.

Ruakaka youngster The Soultaker had a gallop between races at his local meeting on Tuesday pleased all concerned.

Bosson, currently serving a 10-meeting suspension, made the trip north to put the Iffraaj colt through his paces.

He was also in the north enjoying his break and taking in a spot of fishing but it fitted in well with some work and gave him a chance to keep his eye in.

The fishing was good but the Karaka Million is the one connections want to land.

Bosson was aboard when The Soultaker beat Manolo Blahniq in the Murdoch Newell Stakes in November.

They were set down for a repeat clash in the Eclipse Stakes on New Year’s Day, won by Manolo Blahniq in The Soultaker’s absence but a temperature spike kept The Soultaker away.

Logan said he has fully recovered and is ready to fire up tomorrow.

‘‘I didn’t want to take any risks with him,’’ Logan said. ‘‘We want to be there when the big money is up and he is well and truly back on track now.’’

In Bosson’s absence, Sam Spratt has the ride on The Soultaker.
