List of repairs to Rugby Park to be assessed

The Invercargill City Council has completed an assessment of Rugby Park but details are being kept under wraps.

Scaffolding was raised on the Rugby Park building four weeks ago, sparking concern among some councillors who were worried about who was paying for any repair work. It had previously been revealed the council’s purchase of the park was still incomplete.

Invercargill Mayor Tim Shadbolt said the scaffolding had been put up for the assessment and would remain in place for repair work to be carried out.

He was aware of two problems in the park’s building that needed to be fixed, but did not know exactly what they were, he said.

In March council finance director Dean Johnston said the roof of the building leaked in to the corporate boxes. However, yesterday, while he confirmed the assessment of the building was complete, he would not comment on what needed to be done.

‘‘We had an assessment done on what needs to be done and we’re getting that outlined and priced now,’’ he said.

A range of maintenance work would be undertaken but had not begun, Johnston said. ‘‘We’ve cleaned up the spouting, but that’s all so far.’’

The council had a list of things that needed to be repaired, Johnston said. He said he could not say what was on the list.

‘‘We have a list of what needs to be done, but we haven’t decided what’s going to be done. We’re still waiting to get it priced.’’

Cr Ian Pottinger said the repairs to Rugby Park should be raised before the council.

‘‘All I have heard is that it could be in the roof. But it has not come to council.’’

Cr Darren Ludlow said he understood the investigation had not found expensive issues.

‘‘Issues around leaks might not be as suspicious as it might have been. I think they were just doing general maintenance.’’

The purchase of the park was an issue beyond the council and was the concern of the Outdoor Stadium Trust, Ludlow said.

Shadbolt confirmed yesterday the council did not yet own Rugby Park but all that was left was ‘‘crossing t’s and dotting i’s’’.

He did not know when that would be done.
