Woman jailed for drinking, driving

-

A recidivist drink-driver has been sentenced to jail after a judge rejected her lawyer’s pleas for home detention because of her conviction history.

Paku pleaded guilty to refusing to give police a blood specimen, refusing to accompany police, and breaching a zero alcohol licence. Police saw Paku parked on the side of the road on April 7, drinking a stubbie of beer. She was pulled over after she drove off.

Her lawyer, Keith Owen, called for the judge to sentence her to home detention, as recommended in a pre-sentence report. However, the judge did not accept the recommendation.

‘‘I’m not open slightest.’’

Paku had seven previous drinkdriving convictions, between 1988 and 2012, for which the levels were ‘‘extremely high’’.
