Designs shown off on catwalk

- RACHAEL KELLY

More than 300 garments will be paraded on the catwalk at this year’s Hokonui Fashion Design Awards this weekend in Gore.

Convenor Wade Paterson said the final preparations for the show were going ‘‘brilliantly’’.

‘‘It’s gone very smoothly this year. Everyone has a job to do and they just go about doing it quite happily.’’

The judging panel of four, consisting of Auckland fashion designers Lela Jacobs, Jimmy D and Annah Stretton and Kingston’s Jane Sutherland, had spent two days looking over the garments to pick winners in the seven sections.

A new Fantasia section has been introduced in place of the Steampunk section this year.

Paterson said that while the forecast for the weekend wasn’t great, he didn’t think it would be bad enough that people would not be able to travel to the awards.

‘‘The weather is what it is. We’re used to a bit of weather - it is winter after all.’’

The awards, including last night’s Strictly Design Show, are being held at the Gore Town and Country Club.
