Lee finishes strongly to sit four shots off lead

- GOLF

New Zealand golfer Danny Lee is in a tie for 21st after the first round at the US PGA Championship, having come home strong with birdies on the final two holes.

A bogey on the par-three 16th looked to have left him destined to finish no better than even par at Baltusrol Golf Club in New Jersey, but he then found his touch down the stretch, picking up birdies on the two par-fives to finish.

Earlier, his bogey on the parthree fourth was cancelled out by a birdie on the par-four 10th.

American Jimmy Walker is in the lead on five-under, followed by a trio on four-under - Argentine Emiliano Grillo, German Martin Kaymer, and Englishman Ross Fisher.

There wasn’t a lot of good news for the Kiwis in action elsewhere. On the Web.com tour’s Ellie Mae Classic at TPC Stonebrae, Josh Geary is tied for 100th after shooting a one-over par 71 in his first round. He

13 shots behind German leader Stephan Jaeger, while fellow Kiwi Steven Alker is in a share of 149th after a 74.
