Hair design talent impresses at college competition
With just seven months of training under their belts, Southland hairdressing students were on fine form yesterday.
Students from the Community College Southland’s first year hairdressing course put their talent to the test yesterday for the in-house Creative Night Hair competition.
The students had two hours to complete a look designed for the evening.
From the hair and makeup to the outfits, the models presented as a complete package for the competition.
Judges Mikaela Edwards, of Runway in Gore, and Caren Mackay, of Do Hair in Invercargill, admired the technique and skill used by the students.
Edwards said it was great to see the students putting themselves out there and exploring different techniques in hair design.
‘‘If you can make yourself do something a bit scary like this ... it’s good for [future work],’’ she said. ‘‘They’ve done a lot of research into what’s fashionable in hair at the moment.’’
Nailing hair techniques was one thing, and now the students needed to be pushing themselves out of their comfort zones, Mackay said. ‘‘Hopefully today they will have built up a bit of confidence,’’ she said.
Hairdressing tutor Minna Singh said the students ‘‘blew my mind’’ with the looks they had created.
‘‘They’ve spent a lot of hours at school and at home too, taking mannequins home and practising,’’ she said.
The students had spent weeks researching as a part of their course, using tools such as social media and British hair magazines to identify the current trends in their industry.
The competition’s timeframe and working in real time, rather than for pictures, allowed the students to refine their craft on a different level. ‘‘This level sort of steps them up,’’ she said.
