James Hargest pair claim NZ indoor bowls title

INDOOR BOWLS James Hargest College pair of Caleb Hope and Hannah Wilson have won the NZ secondary schools pairs title in Wellington.

They defeated Aotea College duo of Seamus Curtin and Finbar McGuigan 11-4 in the final.

Hope and Wilson were both eliminated in the quarterfin­als of the singles earlier in the meet.

FOOTBALL Verdon College produced an upset 1-0 win over Wakatipu High School in windy conditions at the Linwood boys’ tournament at Turnbull Thomson Park in Invercargi­ll.

Both Southland Boys’ High School teams and James Hargest College recorded excellent firstup wins.

The SBHS first XI defeated Dunedin’s Logan Park 3-1, the SBHS second XI beat Gore High 5-0, while Hargest secured a 2-0 win over Dunstan.

It was hard going for Southland teams in the opening round of the girls’ tournament in Dunedin.

James Hargest, Menzies, Wakatipu and Girls’ High all suffered defeats to Christchur­ch competitio­n heavyweigh­ts.

NETBALL In A Grade, Southland Girls’ High School started with two comfortabl­e victories. They accounted for Gore High 46-15 and Rangiora HS 48-26. Gore lost their two opening games.

Central Southland College pro- duced a hard fought 31-26 win over Wakatipu before going down to Christchur­ch school St Andrews, while Verdon went down by eight goals against South Otago, before winning by the same margin against Rangi Ruru.

Aparima College lost both of their games, while Gore’s St Peters lost to Nelson Girls’ 20-23 and beat Geraldine 43-24.

Southland teams got their B Grade campaign off to a good start, with James Hargest and Menzies recording back to back wins.

In C Grade, Fiordland beat Oxford 28-15 and Tapawera 54-9, while Northern Southland College lost their two games on the opening day.

HOCKEY At the South Island mixed hockey tournament in Gore, Gore High secured a 2-0 win over Mt Aspiring. Northern Southland College lost 3-2 to Kavanagh College from Dunedin and Wakatipu thrashed Logan Park 7-0.

SBHS had a win and a loss on the opening day of the Johnson Cup tournament in Dunedin. They thrashed Western Heights, before losing to Paraparaum­u. Hargest drew 1-1 with Western Heights.

At the Audrey Timlin tournament in Ashburton, Gore High won 2-1 win Marlboroug­h GHS and James Hargest had a 2-1 loss to St Mary’s from Auckland.

Southland Girls’ High lost 6-2 to Epsom Girls, before beating Cashmere High School.

RUGBY Southland Boys’ High School lost to Waitaki Boys’ 25-7 in their opening game at the South Island under-15 boys tournament in Invercargi­ll.

In the SISS rural junior rugby event, Gore High School had 40-5 and 22-19 victories over Waimate and Darfield.

St Peter’s College from Gore also secured two wins against Blue Mountain and Golden Bay.

Verdon, Hargest and Central Southland picked up a win each from two games.

BADMINTON Southland GHS secured an impressive 5-1 victory over Burnside High School in their opening match of the division one championsh­ips in Hamilton.

The SBHS combinatio­n was outplayed by Auckland Grammar School in its first match 6-0.

GOLF It was a tough first round for Southland Boys’ High School at the NZSS golf championsh­ips in Nelson.

They finished the first round in 13th place, well off the pace with a combined total of 265.

The Wakatipu quartet were in 11th position after the first round.

SHOOTING Samantha Welsh from Southland Girls’ High School sits eighth overall and second in C Grade after three rounds at the NZSS shooting championsh­ips with a score of 290.13.
