SGHS netballers continue unbeaten run

Sports reporter highlights the Southland performanc­es at national secondary schools sports tournament­s.

NETBALL Southland Girls’ High School continued their unbeaten run at the South Island secondary schools netball tournament in Nelson.

They defeated Villa Maria College 31-26 to make it to the second round, before accounting for Cashmere 44-24.

Verdon College advanced as top qualifier from their pool to the second round where they grabbed an important 41-29 victory over Dunedin’s Columba College.

Central Southland College also qualified for the second round after beating Avonside 37-19.

They lost their second round match to title contenders St Hilda’s Collegiate 49-27.

St Peter’s College lost 40-16 to competitio­n heavyweigh­ts St Margaret’s College to finish third in their pool.

They defeated Mt Aspiring College 33-21 in their final game yesterday.

Aparima, Gore and Wakatipu finished the first two days of the competitio­n winless.

In B Grade, James Hargest and Menzies finished the first round unbeaten, before both coming unstuck in their opening games of the second round.

Hargest lost to Timaru Girls 30-9, while Menzies were overpowere­d by Darfield 29-17.

Fiordland College won all three of their first round C Grade games before a narrow 21-19 loss to Hurunui Combined.

Northern Southland College lost to Lawrence in their initial second round match after finishing fourth in their pool.

FOOTBALL Teams played just the one game on day two of the Linwood Boys’ football tournament in Invercargi­ll.

SBHS first XI and Central Southland College were the only local teams to win on day two as Dunedin school John McGlashan flexed their muscles with an impressive 11-0 thrashing of the SBHS second XI.

Boys’ High first XI were too strong for St Kevins 6-0, while Central Southland tipped over James Hargest 1-0.

Wakatipu and Verdon picked up draws in Pool C.

In the women’s tournament in Dunedin, Wakatipu were too strong for Kavanagh 3-0, while Menzies, Hargest and SGHS all suffered defeats.

HOCKEY Gore High continued their strong home run at the South both Island mixed tournament.

They thrashed Rodney College 6-0 and accounted for Rangiora HS 4-0.

Wakatipu had an early loss to 4-1 to Greymouth High, while St Peter’s College from Gore defeated Logan Park 4-0.

SBHS have a win and a loss after day two at the Johnson Cup after losing to Macleans College 5-2, while Hargest are still searching for their first win after losing to Waitaki Boys’ 2-0.

James Hargest and Gore drew 1-1 at the Audrey Timlin Memorial in Ashburton, as both teams battled for the crucial second spot in Pool D behind St Mary’s College.

In the Jenny McDonald Cup, Central Southland College lost 4-0 to South Canterbury Rural Combined.

RUGBY SBHS hammered Marlboroug­h Boys’ 44-7 at the South Island under-15 boys’ tournament in Invercargi­ll.

They play Christ’s College today after they defeated Waitaki Boys’ 7-3.

It was hard going for Southland teams at the SISS rural junior rugby tournament.

Gore and Central Southland both tasted defeat in the division one quarterfin­als, while Verdon lost a thriller against Dunstan 24-20 in the division two quarterfin­als.

BADMINTON SGHS moved up to third place with back-to-back wins yesterday in the New Zealand division one championsh­ips. They accounted for Kristin School 5-1 before repeating the dose against Rangitoto College by the same scoreline.

The team of Smith sisters Zoe, Ella and Claudia along with Rebecca Key and Cathy Thompson have three victories from four matches, with their only blemish being a 4-2 loss to Epsom Girls’.

They have a tough day ahead of them today, facing current leaders Macleans College and Westlake Girls’ in crucial, must-win encounters.

SBHS lost comprehens­ively 6-0 to Palmerston North in the boys’ competitio­n and are still searching for their first win in the eight-team competitio­n.

GOLF Wakatipu HS finished eighth in the 13-strong field with a total of 479. Their four-strong team finished 29 shots behind winners Burnside High School in the tworound event.

SBHS finished in 13th and last place at the NZSS golf tournament in Nelson.
