Tight finish in foursomes

Jeremy Hall and Leith Campion have won the 2016 Golf Southland foursomes, played at Queens Park Golf Club on Sunday. The pair, who also finished runnersup at the Otago foursomes recently, were the men’s gross winners with 145, taking home the PR Adams Trophies, just one shot better than runnersup Karl Mariu and Glen Sutherland.

The best men’s nett went to Alan Bailey and Trevor Neilson (138), very narrowly over runners-up Aaron Kerr and Peter Waddell (138

The women’s gross winners, claiming the Ester Blackie Trophies, were Robyn Boniface and Kerry Mariu who won in convincing fashion with 151. Runnersup Olivia Frost and Helen Baird had 170.

Angela Gerken and Jo Wadworth would have done enough to be runnersup in the gross section (165), however instead were crowned the women’s nett winners (146 and runnersup were Fiona Murray and Liz Grimwood (150).

* * * * * Nightcaps has won the prized Laing Shield after defeating Winton Golf Club 3 – 2 at the weekend. The win put an end to what was a shortlived tenure for Winton and no doubt Nightcaps will have celebrated the feat.

Results were (Winton names first): Max Schuster lost to Brett Dobbie 2 down, Alan Ward all square with James Harding, Kelvin Moylan lost to Stuart Dobbie 7 and 5, Stewart Booth lost to Ross Mangels 5 and 4, Steve Ashworth beat Eric Todd 2 and 1 and Allan Wilson beat Herbert Black 5 and 4.

Nightcaps’ first challenge will be from Kingston.

* * * * * The annual Southland ladies Town versus Country match will be played on Thursday at Lumsden Golf Club.

Silver and Bronze teams will contest the highly competitiv­e match. Full team lists can be found at golfsouthl­and.co.nz.

* * * * * The series of meetings about NZ Golf’s Club Capability initiative continues next week, with the next meeting being held at Dipton Golf Club on Tuesday, September 6, at 7pm.

The meeting offers golf club committee members and playing members the chance to hear about the new club capability role and will give you the chance to discuss challenges and opportunit­ies for your clubs.
