Six of Hollywood’s most unusual baby names

-

What is in a name? Not a whole lot in Hollywood, apparently. Here’s to six celebrities who tossed the baby name book aside when it came to picking the perfect name for their brand new bundle of joy:

1. North West In true Kimye style, power couple Kim Kardashian and Kanye West ‘‘broke the internet’’ when they announced the name of their first baby – North West. While many wondered why anybody would name their baby after a compass direction, Kardashian’s mother Kris Jenner revealed she’s all for the name. ‘‘The way [Kim] explained it to me was North means ‘highest power’, and she says that North is [Kim and Kanye’s] highest point together,’’ Jenner said during an interview on The View . ‘‘And I thought that was really sweet.’’

2. Apple Martin The firstborn of Goop founder Gwyneth Paltrow and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin, was named Apple.

Paltrow later explained the name was appealing because of its strong biblical references. ‘‘Apples are so sweet, and they’re wholesome, and it’s biblical – and I just thought it sounded so lovely and clean,’’ the actor said during an interview with Hello! Magazine.

Apple was later joined by younger brother, Moses.

3. Sparrow James Midnight Madden Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte rocker Joel Madden described their son’s name Sparrow as ‘‘character building’’. During an interview with OK Magazine, Madden said the name would be something his son would ‘‘have to stand up for’’.

‘‘It reminded me of the Johnny Cash song A Boy Named Sue,’’ he said. ‘‘ My worry raising a son in Hollywood is ‘what will he have to struggle for’? I wanted to give him a name that he’s going to have to stand up for. I love it.’’

4. Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale Former rock star couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale named their baby boy Zuma Nesta Rock Rossdale. When pressed about the unusual choice of name, Stefani referenced Zuma Beach, in California, telling People Magazine ‘‘it’s really close to where we live.’’

‘‘I just wanted [Zuma] to have a little bit of a quirky name,’’ the No Doubt singer added.

5. Blue Ivy Carter Hip-hop royalty Jay Z and Beyonce welcomed daughter Blue Ivy Carter in June 2012. The couple’s unique choice of name was later trademarked by Jay Z in 2013, with the rapper telling Vanity Fair magazine that ‘‘people wanted to make products based on our child’s name’’.

6. Pilot Inspektor Lee Alvin and The Chipmunks actor Jason Lee named his son after one of his favourite songs. The actor told Entertainment Weekly that the inspiration behind the quirky name came from the rock band Grandaddy’s 2000 album The Sophtware Slump.

‘‘The opening track, He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot, absolutely blew my mind when I first heard it,’’ Lee told the mag. ‘‘It was from this track that my wife, Beth, came up with the name Pilot for our son.’’
