Great Little Train Show steams ahead

- CASSANDRA POKONEY

Planes, trains and automobiles - they will all be on show at the annual Great Little Train Show in Invercargill this weekend.

Run by the Southland Society of Model Engineers, the show runs at the badminton hall at Surrey Park today and tomorrow from 10am until 4pm.

Society Bradshaw member Terry said there would be plenty on offer for everyone.

As well as model trains and displays, there would also be displays of radio controlled boats, displays of remote controlled buggies, aircraft displays and ride on trains.

There would also be a steam powered push bike running on a stand.

While the trains were always popular, the boats were also extremely popular, Bradshaw said.

Most of the boats which would be on the water during the week- end had been built from scratch, and modelled on other boats, he said.

They were often a true labour of love and it was difficult to say how long their creators had spent building them, he said.

The weekend was all about ‘‘big kids and their toys’’, Bradshaw said.

The show usually attracted large crowds and this year was expected to be no different.

Both halls at the badminton centre would be full of people, with visitors expected from as far away as Nelson and Christchurch.

The train show is one of many activities on in the south this weekend.

Other events include the Glengarry 50th reunion in Invercargill, the Kingswell High School reunion, also in Invercargill, the Fiordland Art Society multi-media art exhibition in Te Anau, and the Te Anau Manapouri Fishing Classic.
