Sports tournament week is here
This week is NZ Secondary Schools summer tournament week, set aside for South Island and New Zealand national tournaments.
Southland schools have representatives going to several events over the course of the week.
Four Southland regionals events are taking place as well during this week, while the Otago-Southland Athletics Championships took place at the weekend.
The Southland Lawn Bowls Championships were held on Monday, while the Southland Golf Championships are at Winton on Tuesday and the Otago/Southland Road Cycling Championships take place on Wednesday at Teretonga Park.
Finishing off the week is a Southland Rugby Sevens tournament on Friday at Centrepoint Park.
Southland schools will be represented at the following events during the week – The NZ Maadi Cup rowing regatta at Lake Karapiro.
Southland schools traditionally have been strong contenders at the Maadi Cup with crews and individuals from Wakatipu HS, Southland Girls, James Hargest and Verdon College winning medals previously.
A contingent of Southland athletes from several Southland schools are competing at the NZ Triathlon Championships being hosted in Whanganui.
Both Central Southland and SGHS have teams attending the SI Volleyball Championships in Christchurch on Tuesday and finishes on Thursday.
What is exciting is country school Waiau Area School are attending the NZ Futsal Championships in Wellington.
It has been fantastic for a small school to set a target to play in these championships, the first Southland school to ever do so.
They are up against Wellington’s Rongotai College first up.
It will be a great experience for the students.
Other events which Southland schools are attending include SI Athletics starting on Friday in Dunedin, while Southland Boys are off to the NZ softball tournament in Auckland.
