Wyndham make it three in a row

Wyndham has made it three straight wins to start the 2017 Southland club rugby division one competitio­n with a 25-3 over Riversdale on Wednesday night at the Gore Showground­s.

Riversdale applied plenty of pressure in the first half and limited Wyndham to just five points.

Wyndham’s management team were pleased with their set piece against the bigger Riversdale pack.

Halfback Luke Caldwell was the victors best, first five-eighth Keiren Anderson and No 8 Leighton Coker were the other standouts.

Riversdale coach Garth Lindsay said: ‘‘There was a good standard of rugby played by both teams, Wyndham were too strong in the second half.’’

Fullback Dylan Bungard had a strong game, backed up by No 8 Morgan Will and prop Jarrod Lindsay.

Te Anau beat Midlands 21-13 on Thursday night.

Te Anau Coach Barry Taylor said: ‘‘It was great to have a freeflowin­g game - both teams were positive at ruck time. Our defence was a lot better this week too.’’

James Wairau and Jimmy Corbett were Te Anau’s best.

Midlands No 8 Tim Watt had his usual strong game, along with the brothers Simon and Adam Davis.

Edendale scored six tries in their 41-19 win at home against Waikaka after starting strongly and leading 19-5 at half time.

Edendale coach John Fodie said: ‘‘Our whole team put on a stellar performanc­e.’’

First five-eighth Bram Fodie controlled the game well and Jeremy McLeod tackled relentless­ly.

Waikaka coach David White said; ‘‘boys never got off the bus and Edendale took full advantage of that. At times we showed we could play good rugby but we just couldn’t match what Edendale brought to the game.’’

Meanwhile, in the qualifying grade Drummond Limehills Star beat Ohai Nightcaps 44-19 at Limehills.

Blindside Glen Cunningham’s tackling earned him man of the match, prop Gregor Laughton was good in open play and scored two of the teams six tries, left wing John Shield was good on defence and a made a couple of good runs.

Lock forwards Dave Beer and Steve Brunell worked hard and centre Teifion Davies was good was a flanker with ball in hand.

Fullback Tyler Johnston was the visitors best and often turned defence into attack.

Replacemen­t prop Muipu Lema added some much needed impact - making some big tackles and showed plenty of power and speed in his two try performanc­e.

Waiau Star earned a 28-16 win in perfect conditions at Mossburn.

Prop Cody de Vries had another barnstormi­ng game and flanker Matt Low was into everything.

Mossburn coach Greg Tither said: ‘‘Waiau were strong up front and kept us under pressure throughout. We did fight back to 16-16 at one stage but our discipline was not as good as it needs to be and the penalty count added up, which resulted in two yellow cards. Waiau pounced when we were down to 14 men for the last 20 minutes.’’

Tokanui beat Waikiwi 31-26 in a freeflowin­g game at Les George Oval.

The Tokanui forwards were more effective in the ruck and mauls providing quick ball allowing the backs room to move. Tokanui forwards Grant Maxwell and Elliott Marshall led the tackle count, while backs Ben Buckingham and Simon Van Rossum ran hard and straight. was the locals
