Lorde debuts song at surprise show

-

Fans who managed to bag a ticket to Lorde’s secret, sold out pre-Coachella show were given a sober performance - literally.

The singer debuted a new song from her forthcoming album, Melodrama, due out on June 16, titled Sober.

Video from the gig shows Lorde in the small venue, close to the audience, trating the packed room to her trade-mark dance moves.

Sober sounds more like her earlier work than the two previously released tracks from Melodrama - 90s dance inspired Green Light and the piano ballad Liability - featuring what sounds like layered vocals and a looped backing track.

Lorde announce a surprise midnight show to be held held in California, US, at 6pm New Zealand time ahead of her performance at Coachella.

‘‘Let’s get raucous before Coachella,’’ Lorde posted.

Her first show in two and a half years, the tickets sold out in ‘‘under a minute’’ - a mere six hours before she is set to take the stage.

With tickets priced at only US$20 in celebration of her age, this comes at no surprise.

The lesson in all of this? If you’re a fan and don’t already follow Lorde on social media, it may be time to start.
