Southland honour

Showemup is the first Southland 3-year-old to win the Southern Filly of the Year Award in 22 years. She clinched the title with a third in the Warstep Stakes at Riccarton last Saturday. Her other start in the four-race fillies’ series resulted in a win in the New Zealand Bloodstock Airfreight Stakes at Riccarton on April 8. The Ted Winsloe-trained Tartan Tights was the previous Southland winner of the series in 1995. Ascot Park trainer Sally McKay will not race Showemup again this season. Instead, she has turned out the daughter of Showcasing until early July. ‘‘She’s still a bit weak and immature,’’ McKay said. Showemup’s spring goal will be to race at the New Zealand Cup meeting at Riccarton in November. ‘‘We’re so lucky with her, she can go on any ground and distance – we’ve got a lot of options,’’ McKay said. Showmeup he has won three of 10 starts for owners Denis and Sally Mullally, of Alexandra.
