Top achievement: You can have your say
As part of this year’s Southland Sports Award there will be a People’s Choice Award element for the event.
The ILT Sports Awards organisers have picked out five Southland sports achievements from throughout the 2016/17 period the Sports Awards cover.
The Southland Sports Awards will be held at Ascot Park Hotel in Invercargill on Friday, June 9.
The five achievements selected for you to cast your vote on are:
Eddie Dawkins’ silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The track cyclist claimed a silver as part of the team sprint alongside Sam Webster and Ethan Mitchell.
Genevieve Behrent’s silver medal at at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio. The rower teamed up with Rebecca Scown to claim silver for New Zealand in the coxless pair at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
Netball South’s Beko league victory. The Netball South team which featured many Southland players took out the inaugural national title last year which included the 51-46 victory over Central in the final.
Nathan Stratford’s shearing success on the world stage. The Southland shearer qualified for the World Shearing Championships in Invercargill and provided one of the highlights of the event for the home crowd when he teamed up with Johnny Kirkpatrick won in the teams event and finished third in the individual section.
Southland women’s hockey team’s national title. Southland played Canterbury in a tense final at the end of the national tournament played in Whangerei and at the end of normal time it was 0-0.
