Queenstown’s Chatham Cup run ends

- SCOTT DONALDSON

Queenstown Rovers’ Chatham Cup run has come to an abrupt end at the hands of Nelson Suburbs.

The Jamie Whitmarsh-coached side were humbled 6-1 by Nelson Suburbs at the Queenstown Events Centre on Saturday in the fourth round fixture, to deny them their first ever Chatham Cup quarterfinals appearance.

Nelson Suburbs scored three first half goals through Kristian Gibson, Matt Tod-Smith and Omar Guardiola to give themselves a comfortable buffer heading into the changing sheds at halftime.

Rovers to their credit pegged a goal back straight after halftime to Gareth Beale, but it was shortlived as Ben Wright bagged a double and a Rovers’ own goal in the 69th minute confirmed a comfortable win for the visitors.

In the other Chatham Cup fixture featuring a Football South team, Cashmere Technical secured a hard fought 2-0 win over Dunedin club Caversham.

Meanwhile, Southland United picked up a 1-1 draw against Green Island in their Southern Premier League clash on Thursday night in Invercargill.

Henrique Viana scored Green Island’s goal, while defender Kazuhiro Obata scored for the home team.

The stalemate lifts Green Island into second place with 17 points, while Southland’s fifth draw of the season leaves them in seventh position on the ladder.

There were contrasting results in Southland’s Donald Gray Cup on Saturday.

The closest match of the round saw mid-table teams Thistle and Southend United share the spoils 2-2 at the ILT Turf.

Queens Park picked up three away competition points with a 4-2 win over Winton, while Gore Wanderers not only stretched their lead at the top-of-the-table to seven points, but they boosted their goal difference with an emphatic 17-0 win over Waihopai.

Queens Park claimed the women’s Kolk Cup with a 2-1 win over rivals Southend United, while Queens Park Wyndham secured the women’s division one title.
