Longer shopping hours wanted

- STAFF REPORTERS

Gore is one of the only places in the country to shun Sunday retailing but shoppers want their stores to stay open for longer on a Saturday.

Having longer opening hours was a key finding of a survey carried out by the Gore District Council lead - GoRetail group.

The results of the survey’s findings were presented to retailers last night.

The online survey was carried out to give retailers a better understanding of the needs and expectations of customers as the marketplace continues to evolve.

More than 250 people completed it, representing a broad crosssection of the community.

GoRetail spokesman Ivan van de Water said the group was delighted with the depth of responses and the insight they provided.

‘‘Consumers told us we’re on the right track, but reminded traders there’s still much to do in delivering the range people now expect from their town centres.’’

The need to re-look at weekend trade hours, particularly Saturdays, and a value-priced clothing store were high on the agenda with survey respondents.

‘‘Many people are still missing Postie Plus from Gore’s town cen- tre.’’ van de Water said.

The successful Love Gore Shop Local programme, which has helped highlight the need and value in supporting neighbourhood businesses, is now in its second year.

‘‘It has been great to see retailers working together for the benefit of their town and customers.’’

A key strategy has been to ensure Gore’s retail offer and experience continues to shape around its customers.

‘‘This is especially important in what is a highly competitive market where shoppers’ choices are wider than ever before,’’ Mr van de Water said.

Like many New Zealand towns and cities, online spending continues to grow. Gore shoppers also spend in Dunedin, Invercargill and Queenstown, all of which reduces income potential for businesses in Gore.

Lorraine Nicholson, of First Retail Group, who has been working with Gore businesses, said support for local traders was unique and heart warming.

‘‘We work extensively around the country, but shoppers in Gore are especially proud of their town and its value to the community. We’re sure this recent initiative will help remind people of the value and need to keep it local,’’ she said.
