- FIONA WARD SCHOOL SPORT

The Southland secondary schools term three is now under way, with plenty of sports events coming up in the next few weeks. The Otago-Southland Skiing and Snowboarding Championships and the Southland Table Tennis Championships both take place on August 7.

The Southland Indoor Bowls Championships will be on August 10, followed by the Southland Target Shooting final on August 14.

On August 18 Southland Secondary Schools Sport will be running a new event for international school students.

This will be a games day being hosted at the ILT Stadium Southland comprising of four sports – badminton, futsal, basketball and volleyball.

These sports have been selected because of their global nature.

At the start of September it will be NZ Winter tournament week.

Southland Secondary Schools Sport will have teams and individuals competing in these events, as well as many other tournaments, which will be held around New Zealand.

A summary of what is on during tournament will be published closer to the time.

Other regional events on this term will be the Southland Squash Championships on September 1 and the College Games Volleyball tournament on September 28 .

Archery will be on offer for term three again, so students interested in returning or enrolling as a new participant can register on our website.

Sport development opportunities offered this term include the Southland Secondary Schools Sport student senior leadership forum and also a sports coordinators’ workshop on Wednesday August 16; the theme is ‘‘Stay Focused.’’

Drug Sport NZ will conduct a presentation and the other guest speakers will be Hannah Pascoe and Andrew Moreton.

Adventure Southland will provide team building activities for the students as a practical component.

The focus on upskilling student coaches will continue with the Invest in Sport programme, with participants completing the third workshop on leadership and communication in coaching.
