Disqualified driver says he was taking new car ‘for a run’

-

A driver who was taking his new car for a run won’t ever drive it again after it was confiscated in the Gore District Court yesterday.

Taylor James McBain, 19, of Gore, was driving a Mitsubishi on Anzac St in Gore when he was stopped by police and admitted to being a disqualified driver.

McBain had his driver’s licence disqualified for 12 months in June 2016 when he admitted to driving on two consecutive days in December 2015, when he was also disqualified from driving.

When he was stopped in Gore on May 19, he told police he had just bought the vehicle and was ‘‘taking if for a run.’’

Judge Bernadette Farnan said he should have learnt from his first experience.

‘‘I’m not sure, Mr McBain, why you thought it was appropriate to buy a vehicle when you were still the subject of a driving ban that was still in place.’’

A pre-sentence report says McBain was a high risk of reoffending and Judge Farnan said he had avoided a prison sentence or home detention because of his age.

‘‘I am reluctant to sentence anyone your age to prison but I am putting you on notice that it may happen should you offend in this manner in the future.’’

He was sentenced to 100 hours’ community work, disqualified from driving for 12 months and will serve a period of four months’ Johnston, 22, fined $500 and disqualified from driving for seven months failing to stop to ascertain injury and careless driving on June 11.
