Flying the Waiau flag

- LOGAN SAVORY

Waiau Area School pupil Holly Hammond is doing her school proud through her deeds on the netball court. Logan Savory quizzed Holly about her involvement in the sport.

How long have you been playing netball for?

I’ve been playing netball on and off for about three years. How did you get involved? I got involved with the Waiau Valley club to try something new. My older sisters were playing netball as well so it became a family activity. We played a bit at school as well, so I got to socialise with my friends. What teams do you currently play for? Waiau Valley premier reserve, Central Southland under-14 reps and South of the South A Area Schools team

What are some of your achievements to date?

Being part of the Area Schools A team was a huge achievement for someone my age as the team is normally made of senior students and the Central Southland under-14 team has been awesome to learn new skills. I’ve also been asked to trial for the under-19 Southland development squad. What do you enjoy most about the sport? Being part of a team and meeting new people. Is netball quite big out in the Waiau district?

Unfortunately it’s not. The Waiau and Orawia clubs joined last year to make the Waiau Valley Club. What are your goals with netball? I would love to make it into the Steel team one day.
