Central-Western the team to beat

- LOGAN SAVORY PGG WRIGHTSON CHAMPIONSHIP (Division one)

Central-Western have continued their dream start to the 2017/18 Southland club cricket season with their third win in as many games.

Playing in division one section of the PGG Wrightson Championship Central-Western are the only unbeaten team through the first three games.

Their latest victory was a crushing 181-run win over Wyndale on Saturday.

Batting first Central-Western amassed 245 from their 40 overs with John White (49), James Wadworth (45), and Thomas Beggs (42) all passing 40.

Despite the Central-Western onslaught, Aaron Davidson was able to pick up four wickets.

Wyndale struggled in their chase managing just 64 runs as Connor Wells produced the impressive figures of five overs, four maidens, two runs, four wickets.

Blue Mountain were also big winners on Saturday in division one action with a 193-run win over Tuatapere.

The Tuatapere bowlers struggled to contain Blue Mountain who had the first turn at bat as they racked up 268-5 from their 40 overs.

It was George Shield who led the way with his 96 which came from 86 balls and included six sixes.

He teamed up with Corey Reed (62) as the pair put on 119 for the second wicket after losing opener Michael Stuart in the first over of the game.

In reply, Tuatapere could muster just 75 as James Matheson picked up a fivewicket bag to seal the big win.

In the other division one fixture on Saturday, it was Albion who picked up another win with 14-year-old Finn Hurley again impressing.

Albion were at 22-3 batting first against Appleby/SIT before the teenager, alongside a couple of veterans in Grant Gutschlag and Steve Waddell, rescued the situation.

Hurley top scored with 49 with Gutschlag chipping in with 43 not out and Waddell 42.

Hurley then did the damage with the ball taking 4-38 and was well supported by talented female cricketer Ella Brown (3-29) as Albion recorded the win.

Appleby/SIT got to 204 in reply falling just 17 runs short of victory.

In division two action on Saturday the Metro Cubs shot to the top of the standings with a win over Lumsden in Lumsden, Appleby Development beat Marist in the battle of the Invercargill clubs, and the SBHS 2nd XI recorded a win over Waikoikoi.
