Vukona sets off just like a bullet

- BASKETBALL

New Zealand Breakers basketball great Mika Vukona says his trust and familiarity with the Brisbane Bullets management was a key to him shifting to Australia to further his ANBL career.

Vukona’s signing has been confirmed with the 35-year-old free agent joining the Bullets on a twoyear deal.

Vukona has known coach Andrej Lemanis, assistant coach CJ Bruton and general manager Richard Clarke for over 10 years after their successful time at the Breakers.

He said it was his trust in them, the process and the direction of the Queensland club that really motivated him and his young family to move across the Tasman.

‘‘I have been to battle and I have been to war with those guys and I know what to expect from them and I know I can fully trust them,’’ Vukona said.

‘‘Just to get that excitement back to see their goals and what they have in place for the Brisbane Bullets for the future and moving forward really excites me.’’

Vukona, who won four titles with the New Zealand Breakers, and one with the South Dragons, is coming off his 17th season in the ANBL when he registered his 400th ANBL game.

His toughness and uncompromising attitude make him one of the most respected players in the league.

‘‘Mika is the ultimate team player who will do what it takes for others to be successful and that is the sort of person you want at a club,’’ Lemanis said.

The move was a family one for Vukona, with his wife Vanessa expressing excitement on social media.

‘‘The Vukonas are off on another adventure!! Couldn’t be prouder of this guy,’’ she wrote on Facebook.

‘‘Held his head high and is going to a team that is so excited to have him.

‘‘See ya Bullets!!!’’ soon Brisbane
