Classifieds New perspective following life-changing event

-

Aforced period of ‘down time’ created an opportunity for Kerryn Douglas to stop and reflect on where her life and career were heading.

When her eldest son experienced a lifechanging accident, Kerryn had to take the time to care for him, take him to appointments and act as his main support person during his rehabilitation and therapy sessions.

She is happy to report he is well on his way to recovery, but the accident gave her precious time for self-reflection.

‘‘I previously worked for large employers, processing payroll and providing business development support,’’ Kerryn says.

‘‘I could see a real, some would even say, dire need to help small to medium sized businesses get their payroll processing in good shape.’’

With many small employers struggling to afford to pay the fees that large accounting firms are charging, Kerryn saw an opportunity to help, offering her services with payroll queries, training and, if necessary, assisting with a changeover to smarter software systems, all within their budget.

As is the case with many busy Mums, on any given day Kerryn can wear a number of hats.

‘‘Professionally I call myself a director/ owner,’’ she says.

‘‘I also complete contract work as a payroll trainer for my previous employer, and on any other day, I could be a BMX coach, Mum, wife...I am sure there are others, but let’s leave it at that,’’ Kerryn laughs.

An organised person, she likes keeping things in order, however her role tends to fall into the reactive basket more often than not. Once the children are shipped off to school for the day, Kerryn checks her emails and responds to any requests or queries.

‘‘Today (Tuesday), for example, I was getting some information through for a webinar I am presenting on Thursday,’’ she says.

‘‘I often check in with clients to see how the payroll processing is going for them.

‘‘I like to offer my clients as much or as little support as they want.’’

Often Kerryn has at least a couple of client visits scheduled each day. Tuesday saw her heading off to help with a termination pay calculation, Wednesday an annual leave reconciliation and Thursday she was presenting. Each day varies significantly from the next, depending on her customers individual requirements.

‘‘I love that I am helping small businesses with getting their payroll information correct as well as reducing their costs,’’ says Kerryn.

‘‘So many people think payroll is a ‘set and forget’ process, there is actually lots than can go wrong, simply by not under- standing the Acts which govern payroll.’’

The Holidays Act is a really hefty piece of legislation and quite complicated. Kerryn helps employers through it, making it easier for them to understand and ensuring they are compliant.

‘‘There are lots of new payroll systems available to employers and some of the marketing that has been done, in my opinion, over sells the products,’’ she says.

‘‘I like finding the right fit for clients, something in their price range but with a system that I know can do the job right.’’

Kerryn thanks a number of her previous work colleagues and managers for setting her on the path to business ownership.

‘‘I have worked in the payroll and HR industry for over 15 years,’’ she says.

‘‘Learning is something that I really enjoy and I have recently completed a Diploma in Human Resource Management as well as a Diploma in Management.’’

Prior to Payroll, Kerryn worked in the Dental industry for about 13 years, so it was quite a change of pace. She worked and lived in London, Auckland and Wellington before deciding to settle back in Invercargill.

Kerryn gets the most satisfaction out of helping others succeed, both within her work and outside of it. She has been a volunteer coach at the local BMX track for approximately 10 years and thoroughly enjoys teaching someone a new skill.

‘‘Whether it is riding a bike or processing payroll, it is such an awesome thing to do and so rewarding,’’ she says.

‘‘I guess this translates into why I enjoy helping businesses get their payroll right.’’

It is obvious when talking to Kerryn that she really just loves to help people. In fact, if she could have her time over and choose any career, it would be one where she could care for or educate others.

‘‘I would have quite liked to be a theater nurse or a school teacher, both quite undervalued roles that make a huge difference in peoples lives,’’ she says.

Relaxation time for Kerryn means getting outdoors.

She enjoys walking/tramping and cycling, but doesn’t quite get enough time these days.

‘‘I did walk the Milford Track recently and I am wanting to do some more of that kind of stuff. I also enjoy just catching up with friends over a wine or two.’’
